I’m not going to sugarcoat it – summer in New York is rough. The sun beats on the concrete, the humidity is high, and dressing to not want to rip off your outfit mid-day can be a challenge. Yesterday in the city, temperatures reached upwards of 100 degrees! So no, I’m not exaggerating here people – it’s important to dress appropriately!
I like to spend my summer weekends as close to water as possible. If you know me, you know I’m a California native who only recently moved to New York. While I’ve definitely gotten used to New York life since moving across the country three years ago, there are some things I like to keep consistent. Being close to water is one of them!
On hot summer days in the city I try to keep my outfit fairly minimal. I love to layer, but you get crazy looks from people if you’re wearing pants and a denim jacket in the middle of a heat wave. This summer I’m really feeling printed button downs, especially the easy breezy kind I’ve been seeing everywhere lately. Pair a bold printed shirt with color-matching shorts and a statement slide, and you’re ready to take on the day.
For this look I started with a black and pink printed palm shirt from Zara. Honestly Zara is killing it lately, both with on-trend and quality pieces. I picked up this shirt to wear for the summer and I get so many compliments on it! I wanted to pair it with something easy, so I found a stretch chino short from Topman in a similar tonal pink. These actually come a bit longer, but I had them tailored to bring them up about an inch. Finishing the look are simple printed slides, also from Zara, and my pink frames from Sunglass.la. I cannot speak highly enough about that company, the frames are sturdy and solid and the pieces are trendy and affordable. These came in at a whopping $11!
A simple outfit, a stroll along the harbor, and a drink on the water; what else do you need during summer in the city?
